Support your skin type with Ayurveda. Part 1: Vata
The skin is the largest organ of the body. It is the barrier between the body and the outside world. The health of the skin is important for overall health, immunity, and everyday comfort. Use Ayurveda to heal imbalances in our skin as well as support skin’s natural radiance and vitality.
VATA SKIN IS DRY AND COOL TO THE TOUCH. Vata skin tends to be delicate, sensitive and prone to flakiness. Chemical body products, synthetic textiles, allergens, and extremely dry climates tend to aggravate Vata skin.
To care for Vata skin focus on moisturizing externally and nourishing and building internally. Warming and soothing foods like yogurt, nut and seed butters, and camomile or Tulsi tea nourish Vata skin form the inside out.
Avoid soap-based cleansers and chemicals. Instead, go for oil based products and natural ingredients. Read the label! Parabins, mineral oil, Sodium Laurel Sulfate and “fragrance” may irritate Vata skin. A soothing and strengthening cleansing routine that balances Vata is the Oil Cleansing Method.
Vata skin loves pampering. For a hydrating and nourishing face mask, mix one tablespoon raw honey with one tablespoon yogurt or sesame oil. Apply to your moistened face and let sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with warm water and patting dry. Avoid exfoliating Vata-type skin. Exfoliating will increase irritation and sensitivity. Flakiness, dryness, and sensitivity will naturally decrease as your skin becomes re-hydrated and soothed.
A lavender-cinnamon spray can calm sensitive skin, warm and refresh dry skin, and ease stress. Put 4 drops of lavender essential oil and 3 drops of cinnamon essential oil in a spray bottle of purified water. Shake for one minute. Gently mist face, head, and upper body whenever you need it.
